UN says sanctions yet to impact Russian airlines’ work with UN

UN, Mar 17 (PRIME) -- The anti-Russian sanctions in the sphere of air transportation have not yet had an impact on the work of Russian air carriers with the U.N., Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told PRIME late on Wednesday.

Russian airline Utair has been a subcontractor for the U.N. in distribution of humanitarian aid by helicopters since 1991, and it has been the largest supplier of air transportation services for the organization since 2001.

“As of the moment, there are 15 long-term contracts with Utair and nine other contracts with other Russian airlines in force. None of the contracts has been terminated, and none of the airlines has informed the U.N. about its incapability to fulfill liabilities,” Haq said.

The U.N. General Assembly has not provided powers to the organization to terminate business with suppliers of services from Russia, he said.
